What is an Educational Psychology Assessment?

As an Educational Psychologist I offer an assessment through a collaborative process that aims to build a clear, rounded understanding of a child or young person’s strengths, needs, learning profile, and the factors that may be affecting progress, participation, behaviour, or emotional wellbeing. The purpose is not simply to identify difficulties, but to understand what is happening and what support is most likely to help.

As an Educational Psychologist I usually become involved when concerns remain despite support already being put in place by home, school, or other professionals. The assessment may draw on discussion with parents and carers, consultation with school staff, review of records, observation, and direct work with the child or young person where appropriate. The aim is to understand the child in context and to make practical, evidence-informed recommendations.

What To Expect From Belinda

Every assessment is different. I will select methods that are appropriate to the child’s age, communication style, presenting needs, and the purpose of the referral. This may include consultation, dynamic assessment, observation, questionnaires, person-centred approaches, and, where appropriate, standardised psychological tests. Good practice is thoughtful, proportionate, and sensitive to the child’s experience.

I offer an initial discussion about the concerns, strengths, and hoped-for outcomes.

I gather consent from parents or carers before direct involvement takes place.

We gather information from the adults who know the child best.

I conduct a range of methods including observation, consultation, and, where helpful, direct assessment activities with the child or young person.

I will then give feedback that highlights strengths, needs, and practical next steps.

A written report will be completed as required under different formats to fulfil the role (e.g., as part of a statutory process).
